
Kernels win slugfest against Chiefs, 9-7

The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th inning for a 9-7 win over the Peoria Chiefs in front of 2,155 fans on Saturday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Dwayne Bailey doubled and scored on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI single by Alexi Amarista to score Darwin Perez with an insurance run.
Matt Crawford led the Kernel offense, going 4 for 5 with two doubles, a triple and 2 RBI. Gabe Jacobo was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and Alexi Amarista was 2 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI.
Kernels reliever Chris Armstrong, making a spot-start tonight, held the Chiefs to two runs on four hits and struck out three over five innings in a no-decision effort. Vladimir Veras (1-0) struck out two over two innings for the win. Peoria reliever Kevin Kreier (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits over 1.2 innings.
The Kernels survived a five-run Peoria sixth inning, capped with a grand slam by Nelson Perez, and won their first game against the Chiefs this season. The Kernels improve to 11-11 as Peoria falls to 11-10.
Game two is Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm as Manuel Flores starts for the Kernels against Chris Carpenter for Peoria. It's a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Day - fans can get autographs from the Kernels on the main concourse from 1:20 to 1:40 pm and play catch in the outfield and run the bases after the game. Youngsters can meet Cinderella at the stadium during the game and fans can play Travel Advisors Baseball Bingo for a chance to win a trip to Anaheim and an Angels game in 2010.
