Dayton Dragons News Release

Davenport, Iowa-Quad Cities starting pitcher Adrian Alcantara struck out 11 batters and allowed only one run over six and two-thirds innings as the River Bandits defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-1 in the start to a six-game series on Tuesday. The Dayton loss snapped their four-game winning streak.

Game Recap: The game began as a pitcher's duel between Alcantara and new Dragons starter Sam Benschoter (BEN-scooter), who was added to the roster earlier on Tuesday. Over his first three innings, Benschoter faced the minimum nine batters, striking out five of the nine. But in the fourth, Quad Cities collected five hits and two runs to take a 2-0 lead.

The Dragons scored in the sixth when Jay Allen walked with one out, stole second, and came home with two outs when Rece Hinds lined a double to the left field fence to make it 2-1.

The Dragons had a great chance to tie the game in the seventh inning. Justice Thompson led off by lining a double to the fence in center field and went to third on a wild pitch. With tying run at third and no outs, Alcantara struck out Jose Torres and got Mat Nelson to pop out to first base. Left-handed reliever Parker Harm replaced Alcantara and struck out left-handed batting Michel Triana to end the threat.

Quad Cities added a run in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 3-1. The Dragons were retired in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.

Benschoter worked five innings, allowing six hits (five of them in the fourth) and two runs with two walks and five strikeouts. He was charged with the loss. Jake Gozzo pitched a perfect sixth inning for Dayton. Manuel Cachutt worked two innings, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Dragons collected five hits by five different players. The only extra base hits were the doubles by Hinds and Thompson.

The Dragons dropped to 4-2 on their current road trip, which is now scheduled for 11 games after a rain-out on Sunday in Fort Wayne.

The Dragons full-season record fell to 55-57 with the loss. They are 16-30 in the second half. Quad Cities improved to 47-68 overall and 21-28 in the second half.

Up Next: The Dragons meet the River Bandits in the second game of the series on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Chase Petty (0-2, 5.40) will start for the Dragons.
