Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich.-Preston Mattingly lined a base hit to center field to drive in Jovanny Rosario from third base and break a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning as the Great Lakes Loons went on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 5-2 in the Midwest League opener for both clubs on Thursday night.
Great Lakes took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Dragons tied the game in the fifth. Dayton's Jason Bour doubled, went to third on Kevyn Feiner's infield single, and scored on Justin Reed's fielder's choice ground out to even the score at 1-1.
Dayton took a brief lead in the top of the sixth when Todd Frazier walked and scored with one out on a triple to the right field corner by Mike McKennon.
But Great Lakes scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Joe Becker led off the frame with a double to left-center and went to third on Rosario's bunt single. Rosario stole second and Becker stole home on the back end of the double steal to tie the game. One batter later, Mattingly drove in Rosario with a base hit to make it 3-2.
Mattingly added an RBI double in the eighth and later scored on a single by Brian Mathews to make it 5-2 and close out the scoring.
Dayton starting pitcher Scott Carroll pitched well, especially over the first five innings, but suffered the loss. He allowed just three singles, no walks, and an unearned run over the first five innings before allowing three hits and two runs in the sixth.
The Dragons finished with six hits by six different players. Frazier walked three times and stole a base.
The Dragons and Loons meet again Friday at 7:05 at Dow Diamond in the second game of the season. Left-hander Jamie Arneson will start for the Dragons against Great Lakes right-hander Bryan Morris. The game can be heard on 1410 ESPN Radio and at www.daytondragons.com.
The Dragons home opener is Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field against the Fort Wayne Wizards.
Notes: The Dragons placed pitcher Matt Klinker on the disabled list prior to Thursday and activated pitcher Kevin Gunter from extended spring training. Klinker is expected to miss only 7-10 days with shoulder soreness.
