Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (April 3, 2008) - The Burlington Bees began the 2008 campaign Thursday night with a 2-0 victory over the Peoria Chiefs at Community Field. Starting pitcher Danny Gutierrez and relief pitcher Anthony Bradley combined for a two-hit shutout. Clint Robinson led the hitting attack for Burlington going 2-2 with two doubles while Adrian Ortiz and Jason Taylor each scored run for the Bees.
On a cold and rainy night, the game quickly turned into a pitching duel. Peoria Chiefs starter Ryan Acosta, who was placed into the starting rotation earlier on Thursday, pitched three innings allowing just two hits. Craig Muschko relieved Acosta and pitch three great innings of his own allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.
Bees starting pitcher Danny Gutierrez was just as good, if not better, as he pitched five innings allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts.
Going into the bottom of the seventh inning with no score, Jordan Latham relieved Muschko. Mike Moustakas led the inning off with a single. Taylor then took Moustakas' place at first when he reached on a fielder's choice. Robinson walked to put runners on first and second before Walton reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and third. Antonio Jimenez then singled Taylor in from third for the first run of the game.
The Bees added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Adrian Ortiz led off with a single and then advanced to second on an Alwin Perez walk from Latham. David Lough flew out to centerfield but Ortiz was able to tag from second and advance to third. A throwing error by Latham resulted in Ortiz coming in to score the final run of the night.
Anthony Bradley pitched four no-hit innings to finish out the game. He picked up the win.
At the plate, Robinson had two of the three hits that Burlington had through the first six innings. Robinson had his two doubles and was never retired. Ortiz also had two hits to go along with his run scored. Jimenez had the only RBI of the evening.
Burlington will once again host Peoria on Friday night. Edward Cegarra will get the start for Burlington while Dae Eun Rhee will toe the rubber for Peoria. First pitch is set for 6:30. The game can be heard on both 1490 KBUR and GoBees.com.
