Dragons Erase 5-1 Deficit, Win 9-6 in Extra Innings at West Michigan

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Austin Callahan hit a home run and drove in three runs while Justice Thompson added a two-run homer as the Dayton Dragons erased a four-run deficit and defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 9-6 in 10 innings on Wednesday night. The Dragons remained perfect in the second half at 4-0 with the win and improved their full-season record to 37-33. They are four games over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

The Dragons, who trailed 5-1 after five innings, broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the top of the 10th for the win.

Trailing by four in the top of the sixth, the Dragons rallied for five runs to take the lead. Callahan blasted a two-run homer, his fifth of the year, to make it 5-3. Jack Rogers delivered a run-scoring triple to make it 5-4, and Thompson followed with a home run to give Dayton a 6-5 lead. The homer was Thompson's fifth of the year.

West Michigan scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 6-6.

In the top of the 10th, with free runner Trey Faltine at third and one out, Callahan doubled to the right field fence to bring in the run and give the Dragons a 7-6 lead. Mat Nelson followed with a double off the left field fence to score Callahan and make it 8-6. Rogers then singled to left, and Nelson raced in to score when the ball was mishandled by the left fielder to push the Dragons lead to 9-6.

Braxton Roxby (2-2) pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th inning for the Dragons and was credited with the win. He retired all six batters he faced.

The Dragons had 12 hits. Rogers had a single, double, and triple. Nelson had two hits and scored three runs. Edwin Arroyo also had two hits. Callahan had a double and homer to add to his league-leading extra base hit total.

Up Next: The Dragons (4-0, 37-33) meet West Michigan (2-2, 34-35) in Grand Rapids in the second game of the series on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Chase Petty (0-1, 1.29) is scheduled to start for Dayton.
