Dayton, Ohio-Ryan Tepera tossed eight and one-third strong innings and Brad McElroy hit a tie-breaking home run as the Lansing Lugnuts edged the Dayton Dragons 3-2 before a crowd of 8,614 on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. The Lugnuts earned their eighth straight victory and completed a sweep of the three-game series. They dropped the Dragons to 18-22 on the season. Lansing improved to 25-14.
Tepera retired 15 straight batters from the fourth inning into the ninth. He allowed a one-out single to Henry Rodriguez in the ninth inning to put the tying run on base and was replaced on the mound by Steve Turnbull. Chris Richburg struck out as Rodriguez stole second. Josh Garton grounded out to first to end the game.
Lansing scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Dragons bounced back in the second when Garton doubled to right and scored on Kevin Coddington's triple to make it 2-1. In the third, Dayton tied the game when Andrew Means reached on a bunt single and scored on a triple to right by Didi Gregorius. Lansing regained the lead in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by McElroy, his second of the year, to give Lansing a 3-2 lead and close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Justin Walker worked the first six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs with no walks and six strikeouts. He was charged with the loss and fell to 1-5.
Walker and reliever Chase Ware combined to notch 10 strikeouts without walking a batter in the game. Lansing pitchers also issued no walks.
Dayton collected six hits. Garton was 2 for 4. Mark Sobolewski had three hits for Lansing.
The Dragons open a new series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Fifth Third Field. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cable Channel 23). Former Reds pitcher Doug Bair will provide commentary. Jacob Johnson (0-3, 5.40) will start for Dayton against Wilking Rodriguez (1-3, 3.83). The series will include a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, May 22nd with games at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. The noon contest is a make-up game resulting from a postponement on Sunday, May 2nd.
