Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, MI - The Loons designated hitter Angelo Songco was the centerpiece of Great Lakes' offense in the team's series-clinching 7-5 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods Thursday morning in front of a record-high School Kids Day attendance of 5,613.

Songco hit a double in the second inning that rolled to the center field wall to bring in Blake Smith for the first run of the game. In his second at-bat, the 21-year-old hit a two-run triple and was driven in on a double from first baseman Jaime Ortiz for the 4-0 lead. Songco hit another double in the sixth and finished three-for-three with two runs and a season-high three RBI.

The Loons put three more runs on the scoreboard in the eighth inning, via on a solo home run from Jerry Sands, an RBI-single from Ortiz, and a J.T. Wise sacrifice fly.

From the mound, starter Matt Magill recorded his first win of the season by fanning six Hot Rods over five scoreless innings.

"I felt good and I was getting ahead of hitters," Magill said of his day. "I felt like my fastball was coming out better and I was throwing my curveball for more strikes, but it was my offense that helped me get the 'W'."

Loons reliever Allen Webster tossed three innings in relief, surrendering two runs on three hits over three innings. Luis Vasquez pitched in the game's final inning and allowed three runs on three hits. Bowling Green's starter Jason McEachern (1-5, 5.53) received the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits over six innings.

In the ninth inning, a string of hits from Bowling Green, coupled with one hit batsmen and two wild pitches from Vasquez allowed the Hot Rods to pull within two, but the Loons held on to win 7-5 and take the series 2-1.

Sands extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Infielders Jaime Ortiz and Brian Ruggiano also produced multi-hit games for the Loons. The team finished with 11 total hits.

The Loons hit the road Friday for a four-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts, who entered Thursday a half-game ahead of the Loons for second place in the Midwest League Eastern Division. RHP Will Savage (2-1, 2.53) will throw in game one of the series for Great Lakes; Lansing starter TBD.

The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
