Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Junior Arias raced in from third with the winning run on Tanner Rahier's infield single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 6-5 on Saturday night before a crowd of 9,085 at Fifth Third Field. The win, the first "walk-off" victory of the season for the Dragons, prevented Lake County from completing a three-game sweep in the first series of the second half.

The game also marked the first time this season that the Dragons won a game in which they trailed going to the ninth inning. Lake County led 5-4 going to the bottom of the ninth before the Dragons tied the game.

In the 10th, Arias doubled over the head of Lake County right fielder Anthony Santander with one out. Seth Mejias-Brean singled off the glove of third baseman Erik Gonzalez as Arias went to third, and Jeff Gelalich was given an intentional walk to load the bases. With the infield at double play depth, Rahier hit a slow ground ball toward shortstop. Dorssys Paulino charged the ball but did not have a play at the plate as Arias scored to end the game.

The Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the ninth after Santander had hit a three-run home run for Lake County in the eighth to bring them back from a 4-2 deficit as the Captains took a 5-4 lead. Brent Peterson led off the Dayton ninth with a sinking liner to right. Santander charged and tried to make a lunging catch, but the ball glanced off his glove and rolled toward the fence. Peterson raced around to third with a triple, and Zach Vincej followed with a deep sacrifice fly to right to tie the game.

The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Daniel Pigott tripled to center field with two outs and scored on Sammy Diaz's double to right. Diaz scored on a single to left by Junior Arias.

The Dragons added two more runs in the fourth. Tanner Rahier reached on an infield single to start the inning and scored on Zach Vincej's triple off the fence in left-center field. Vincej scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0. Lake County scored two unearned runs in the sixth and took the lead on Santander's homer in the eighth.

Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano worked the first six innings and was outstanding. He allowed two unearned runs on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Sean Lucas (3-1) gave up the homer to Santander in the eighth but retired the next seven batters and was credited with the win.

The Dragons finished with 12 hits. Arias and Rahier each had three while Vincej had two.

The Dragons (1-2) will open a new three-game series at Fifth Third Field against the Lansing Lugnuts (0-3) on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Ismael Guillon (3-6, 6.00) will start for the Dragons against Lansing's Javier Avendano (4-5, 4.43). All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
