
Down to Last Strike Twice, Vipers Rally

Down by one run the Calgary Vipers rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Edmonton Capitals 4-3 before 2164 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Trailing 3-2 with two outs in their last at-bat and twice with two strikes on a batter the Snakes rattled off three straight singles for the victory. With the win Calgary improves to 9-2 on the second half of the season and moves back into first place in the North Division. Overall the Vipers are now 32-22 on the Golden Baseball League season.
Calgary starter Dusty Gober was excellent tossing seven innings without surrendering an earned run or regular walk while striking out six. Claudio Galva (2-1) recorded the victory after throwing a one-two-three ninth inning.
Edmonton opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Larry Bigbie reached on an error, Tom Collaro singled, Matt Rogelstad drove in a run with a base hit, Alex Prieto singled, and Nick Valdez also plated a run with a base knock for a 2-0 advantage.
Julio Ramirez cut the lead in half at 2-1 for the Vipers in the seventh with his 12th home run of the season.
The Capitals quickly went back in front by two runs at 3-1 in the next half inning as with two outs Cliff Brumbaugh singled and Rogelstad doubled him home for his second run batted in of the game.
Calgary got back within one run in the eighth frame when Jonny Kaplan, Guillermo Reyes, Brent Metheny, and Drew Miller all walked for a 3-2 score.
In the bottom of the ninth inning Jorge Mejia singled with one out, with two outs and two strikes both Kaplan and Reyes singled to load the bases, and Metheny was the hero with a two-run single for the 4-3 final.
Calgary concludes this first-place showdown and four-game series with the Edmonton Capitals on Monday July 26th at 7:05 PM MDT for $5.00 Student Night.
