Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals continued their six-day homestand with an afternoon contest, wrapping up a series against the Yuma Scorpions on Sunday. Taking to the mound in game five for the Seals was Isaac Hess (2-1), who faced off against Ronny Malave (0-0) for the Scorpions.
With the two starters going toe-to-toe through four scoreless innings, Victoria opened the scoring in a wild bottom half of the fifth that saw the home side register five runs. Dale Swinford started things off by hitting a blooper over the head of first baseman Mark Samuelson that caused Peeter Ramos to commit a throwing error to second, allowing a run to score.
Hess then brought the crowd to their feet, hitting a three-run blast over the left field fence for his first career home run, and a 4-0 advantage. The fifth and final run of the frame was a result of a suicide squeeze off the bat of Charlie Strandlund, with Wilver Perez charging home from third.
Yuma then broke Hess' shutout bid and put a lone run on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with an RBI double off the bat of Samuelson. Adding insurance in the sixth, though, the Victoria scored two runs off of a double from Colin Moro, a walk to Matt Kavanaugh, and a two run single from Wilver Perez to cap off the scoring for a 7-1 victory.
Following the game Hess said, "I want to dedicate my win to one of my best friends from childhood, Danny and his new bride Jen Mlagan. Sorry I couldn't be there, but this game was for you!"
Isaac Hess recorded his third win of the campaign for Victoria, going seven strong innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out eight. Ronny Malave took the loss for Yuma, going five innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, while retiring two batters. Wilver Perez contributed to the Seals' offense going 3-for-4 with two RBI's, but Hess was the story on the day, hitting a three-run homerun for his only hit in three at bats. Mark Samuleson recorded two hits and an RBI in a losing cause for the Scorpions .
