Edmonton Capitals News Release
Calgary, AB - The Edmonton Capitals were just one out away from winning their second straight road game against the Calgary Vipers on Sunday, but closer Chad Blackwell gave up a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Caps lost 4-3.
After the Vipers put up 10 runs and won 10-5 in the first game of the four-game series on Friday, and the Caps battled back with 10 of their own in a 10-1 win on Saturday, it was the pitching, not the offence, that controlled the third game of the four-game series at Foothills Stadium.
Caps starter Daryl Arreola, tossing his second game since being acquired from the Yuma Scorpions, pitched seven and one-third innings and gave up two runs on three hits while striking out four. His counterpart, Calgary's Dusty Gober, was also on his game, giving up eight hits for two runs and striking out six through seven innings.
Edmonton took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when second baseman Matt Rogelstad and catcher Nick Valdez each hit RBI singles, but Calgary's Julio Ramirez blasted a solo home run in the seventh to cut the lead to 2-1. The teams then traded runs in the eighth, with Rogelstad hitting an RBI double, as the Caps held a slim 3-2 advantage going into the bottom of the ninth.
Blackwell retired two of the first three batters, but Jorge Mejia, Jonny Kaplan and Guillermo Reyes each got on with singles to load the bases. Brent Mahoney was the hero for the Vipers, singling in Kaplan and Mejia to win the game in dramatic fashion.
The Caps and Vipers square off once more in Calgary, Monday at 7:05 p.m., before heading north to Edmonton for 7 p.m. games on Wednesday and Thursday at TELUS Field. The Vipers are back in first place in the North in the second half at 9-2, while Caps drop to second at 6-2.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
