Doughboys Walked off for Third Straight Night

The Johnson City Doughboys fell in nail-biting fashion to the Kingsport Axmen on Sunday night, losing 2-1 on a walk-off single from Ben Rozenblum in the eighth inning.

The defeat is the Doughboys' third walk-off loss in as many nights. Johnson City fell 12-11 to Bristol in ten innings on Friday and 6-2 to Kingsport on Saturday in ten innings.

One night after Kingsport's Dante Leach hit a grand slam to walk it off at Hunter Wright Stadium, the Axmen catcher Ben Rozenblum wrestled free the hero mantle from his teammate, punching a shot down the left field line with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the Father's Day crowd in Kingsport into a frenzy

Johnson City (5-10) had appeared to have all the momentum after Jaxson Crull doubled to right field to score Ashton King in the top of the seventh inning The run was the first of the game, and gave the Doughboys a 1-0 lead, needing to record just three more outs for the win

However, Kingsport (6-9) got a tying run in the bottom of the seventh and then held the Doughboys scoreless in the top of the eighth, setting up Rozenblum's game-winning hit.

In the loss, RHP Brett Banks turned in his best performance as a Doughboy, holding the Axmen to no hits through the first four innings before finally allowing a groundball single in the fifth. Banks was finished after five innings with one hit allowed and no runs. LHP Gianluca Shinn tossed a scoreless sixth inning in relief for Johnson City.

Johnson City tallied just four hits on the night. With the one run, they tied their lowest scoring total of the season. The Doughboys have now lost four games in a row and seven of their last eight.

Johnson City will have an off-day on Monday before traveling to Bluefield to face the Ridge Runners in a two-game series. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 7 p.m.
