Johnson City Doughboys News Release
The Johnson City Doughboys fell in walk-off fashion for the second straight night on Saturday, losing to the Kingsport Axmen, 6-2 on a grand slam in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Dante Leach hit his first home run of the season over the left field wall to end the game.
One game after getting beaten 12-11 on a walk-off double in Bristol, the Doughboys suffered their second straight extra innings loss.
Johnson City (5-9) struck first in the sixth inning when Jordan Stevens drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 1-0. However, Kingsport (5-9) evened it out, 1-1, with a wild pitch scoring Pablo Ruiz after he led off the eighth inning with a triple.
In the top of the tenth frame, Cherokee Nichols lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Chryan Cruse and make it 2-1 in favor of the Doughboys, but Kingsport tied it up 2-2 in the home half of the inning before Leach sent everyone home with a mighty swing of the bat.
RHP Seth Willis started for the Doughboys and tossed four scoreless frames with three strikeouts. LHP Miguel Fulgencio pitched in the fifth and did not a allow a run, and RHP Walker Trusley held the Axmen scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings with two strikeouts total.
Kingsport had scored just one run all season in the sixth inning or later before getting all six of their runs in the eighth and tenth innings on Saturday.
Johnson City will try to get some measure of revenge when they return to Kingsport on Sunday evening for a seven-inning contest. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
