Johnson City Doughboys News Release
One night after falling in disappointing fashion, Johnson City cruised to a 16-4 home victory over Kingsport on Friday.
Ricky Jimenez picked up a season-high four hits, Troy LaNeve hit his first home run, and Joe Vetrano went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple. Eight different Doughboys picked up an RBI.
The twelve-run win is the largest margin of victory for Johnson City (13-24-1) this season.
Johnson City wrestled control of the game with a monster eight-run third inning that saw them bring twelve batters to the plate and pick up six hits. The Doughboys scored all eight runs with two outs in the frame, getting big hits from LaNeve, Jimenez, Jaxson Crull, Cherokee Nichols, Alan Espinal, and Chyran Cruse.
Later, in the fifth inning, LaNeve drove in the second of his four RBIs with a sacrifice fly before Jimenez doubled to drive in Vetrano, making it 11-1 in favor of the Doughboys.
LaNeve wasn't done, as he then hit the longest Doughboys home run of the season to lead off the seventh inning, a 439-foot blast to center field one night after Vetrano hit one to the same spot that was measured at 438 feet. The Vanderbilt outfielder finished his stellar game with one final RBI on a groundout in the eighth inning.
LaNeve wasn't the only Doughboy to have a big night. One game after Vetrano went 3-for-4 with a home run, the Boston College slugger proceeded to slam two doubles and a triple while scoring four runs on Friday. Vetrano then made his first pitching appearance of the season in the ninth, finding enough gas in the tank to get three outs after allowing a home run to Kingsport's Van Gupton Jr.
Donye Evans, Marques Johnson, Andrew Ronne, and Vetrano all combined to hold the Road Warriors to seven hits. The four Doughboy pitchers also collected eleven total strikeouts while allowing two home runs. Prior to Friday, Johnson City had been 2-13 when their opponents hit at least one home run.
With the win, Johnson City finishes their season series with Kingsport having won three of eight games against the Axmen/Road Warriors.
Johnson City will try to keep the good energy going on Saturday night as they continue their homestand with the first contest in a two-game series against the Princeton Whistlepigs. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
