Johnson City Doughboys News Release

Johnson City ended their road series at Princeton with a 17-3 drubbing at the hands of the WhistlePigs on Friday night.

The loss continues an eight-game skid for the Doughboys (8-19-1), and was their worst defeat of the season.

Early on, Johnson City appeared to be breaking out of their offensive slump. Trailing 2-0, the Doughboys put together four hits in a row to open up a promising second inning. After a Joe Vetrano single, Ashton King mashed a double before Jaxson Crull and Conner James both beat out infield singles to tie the game, 2-2.

Later in the second inning, Johnson City would take their only lead of the game, 3-2, when Damani Thomas got to first on a dropped third strike that allowed Cherokee Nichols to score from third.

From that point, Princeton (17-11) scored 15 unanswered runs, including five in the fourth inning and seven in the seventh inning.

The WhistlePigs' Dylan Rogers hit two home runs, including a towering 430-foot blast in the seventh, and shortstop Brady Day hit one out as well.

For the first time this season, the Doughboys went to a position player, catcher Brady Cottom, to throw the final two innings once the game was decided.

Thomas hit an eighth inning triple, his first of the season, to finish his night 2-for-4. Six other Doughboys collected one hit each.

Up next, Johnson City will look to snap the losing streak when they begin a two-game series on the road at Elizabethton starting Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
