Knoxville Smokies News Release

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Chicago Cubs announced a transaction that impacts their Double-A affiliate Tennessee Smokies roster prior to this evening's contest against the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Cubs left-handed starter Felix Doubront has returned to Chicago's active roster from his Major League Rehab Assignment with the Smokies, and is expected to start this afternoon for the Cubs in the first game of their doubleheader in St. Louis. The Venezuela native made one start for Tennessee on August 24 at Smokies Stadium and suffered the loss after yielding four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits in 4.1 innings of work, adding three walks and five strikeouts. Combined over three starts with Triple-A Iowa and Tennessee during his rehab assignment, the southpaw posted an 0-2 record and 5.65 ERA (9 ER in 14.1 IP).

The lefty was acquired by the Cubs from the Boston Red Sox on July 30, 2014 for future considerations after posting a 2-4 record and 6.07 ERA (40 ER in 59.1 IP) in 17 appearances (ten starts) with the Red Sox. Over parts of five seasons with Boston, the 26-year-old has compiled a 26-22 record and 4.82 ERA (224 ER in 418.0 IP) in 98 outings, including 69 starts. Doubront was originally signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent on July 12, 2004.

The Smokies and Lookouts are scheduled to square off in the third game of their five-game set to finish the 2014 regular season, with both teams tied for first in the second half North Division standings. Tennessee is expected to give the nod to RHP C.J. Edwards (1-1, 2.25), while Chattanooga is anticipated to send RHP Matt Shelton (4-4, 4.19) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
