Jackson Generals News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Generals (30-38/61-76) held off a late charge in the ninth from the Montgomery Biscuits (31-37/66-72) Saturday at Riverwalk Stadium and stopped a three-game losing streak, winning 4-3. Jackson starter Tyler Olson (10-7, 3.52) shutout the Biscuits over 7.0 innings and allowed only two hits as he struck out three. Olson also became the first Generals pitcher to win four straight starts and earn 10 wins. He becomes the first Jackson pitcher since J.R. Mathes in 2006 to record 10 wins in a season.
Jackson started the scoring in the second inning as back-to-back singles were followed by Kevin Rivers' (2x4, 2B, 2 RBI) 23rd double of the year. The hit scored Jabari Blash (2x5, R) and Dan Paolini (2x4, R) for the early 2-0 lead.
D.J. Peterson (1x5, R, HR, RBI) hit his 11th Double-A home run and 29th overall this season with two outs in the fifth. The solo homer gave the Generals a 3-0 lead. Peterson also collected his 105th RBI this season.
In the seventh Tyler Smith (3x5, R, 3B) led off with his first Double-A triple and scored two batters later when Pat Kilvehan (2x5, 2B, RBI) grounded out and increased Jackson's lead to 4-0.
Montgomery made things interesting for Jackson in the ninth as with two outs Jeff Malm singled home Richie Shaffer to get the Biscuits on the scoreboard at 4-1. After Hector Guevara earned a base hit Willie Argo doubled to score Malm and Guevara to cut the lead to 4-3. But that's the closest Montgomery came as Jackson held on for the win.
Olson earned the win with 7.0 impressive shutout innings as Albert Suarez (3-6, 4.34) took the loss for Montgomery. Olson finished the month of August going 5-1, with a 1.18 ERA in six starts. Suarez was rocked, as he allowed three runs on ten hits in only 5.0 innings. Stephen Shackelford (5-2, 3.16) and Mayckol Guaipe (1-3, 11 SV, 2.78) came out of the bullpen for Jackson, Shackelford completed a scoreless eighth as Guaipe struggled in the ninth, but held on for the win.
The Generals will attempt to even the series with Montgomery Friday at Riverwalk Stadium in game four of the set. Stephen Landazuri (6-5, 3.94) will make the start for Jackson as Montgomery will send Jim Patterson (4-0, 3.81) to the rubber. The game will begin at 5:35 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
