Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats won the first game of their doubleheader 10-1 in Staten Island on Sunday, before the second game was suspended due to rain.

The 10-1 ValleyCats win served as the originally-scheduled Sunday afternoon game, while the two teams could only make it through one inning of their makeup of Saturday night's postponed contest.

In the completed game Tri-City scored in six out of the seven innings played, with Jeremy Pena, Carlos Machado, Austin Dennis and Cesar Salazar each amassing multiple hits.

Salazar led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included a team-high three runs batted in.

The ValleyCats scored exactly one run in each of the first five innings, before a five-run eruption in the sixth.

Pena, Dennis, Machado and Alex Holderbach each scored a couplet of runs for the ValleyCats.

On the pitching front, Nivaldo Rodriguez started the game for Tri-City, only allowing one run during his four innings of work.

Carlos Hiraldo then took over with two scoreless innings to earn his second win of the year, before Riley Cabral ended the game with a scoreless frame.

The entire New York-Penn League will have off on Monday, July 23, before the ValleyCats return home for a six-game homestand beginning on Tuesday, July 24.

Tuesday's game against the Auburn Doubledays will also serve as Jose Altuve Bobblehead Giveaway Night at "The Joe," as the ValleyCats' honor the defending American League MVP, who suited up for Tri-City in 2009.

The resumption of Sunday's suspended game will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 prior to the ValleyCats' and Yankees' originally scheduled 7 p.m. game at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium that night.
