Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Hudson Valley Renegades rightfielder Jake Stone finished a homerun shy of the cycle as he collected three hits and scored both runs, including the game-winner in the ninth, as the Renegades completed a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters 2-1 Sunday evening at Dutchess Stadium. With the win, the Renegades swept all six games from the Lake Monsters at The Dutch this season and have won the last nine meetings from Vermont.
Vermont drew first blood in the first. With two out and the bases empty, third baseman Jonah Bride lined a double off the wall in leftfield. He scored when the next batter, designated hitter Alfonso Rivas, grounded a single to left to give the Lake Monsters a 1-0 lead.
Things stayed that way until the seventh inning when the Renegades would tie things up. Hudson Valley had left four runners in scoring position before finally pushing a run across. Stone led off with a ground-rule double to right-centerfield. After a strikeout, Stone moved to third on a groundout before leftfielder Justin Bridgman lined a two-out single to left to score Stone and tie the game at one.
It would remain tied until the ninth. Stone started the inning with a line-drive triple to left-centerfield. After a strikeout and back-to-back intentional walks, shortstop Ford Proctor lifted the game-winning sacrifice fly to left to bring in Stone and give Hudson Valley the 2-1 win.
Getting the victory for the Renegades was reliever Jack Labosky (2-1) who got a strikeout and groundout to get Hudson Valley out of a first and second, one-out jam in the top of the ninth. The loss fell to Lake Monsters relief man Clark Cota, who allowed the game-winning run on a hit and two intentional walks in 0.2 innings.
Though they didn't figure in the decision, middle relievers Jesus Ortiz of Hudson Valley and Rafael Kelly of Vermont were brilliant. Ortiz fired 3.1 innings of scoreless ball on one hit with two strikeouts. Kelly, meanwhile, gave up a run on five hits in six innings with seven strikeouts.
The Renegades recorded eight hits. In addition to the three from Stone, Bridgman and first baseman Jacson McGowan chipped in with two singles apiece. Bridgman, of course, had the game-tying RBI.
The Lake Monsters had six hits including a 2-4 effort from Rivas who singled, doubled and drove in a run. Centerfielder Devin Foyle aided the Vermont cause with two singles of his own.
The Renegades will now hit the road for a six-game trip beginning Tuesday with game one of a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners. First-pitch is scheduled for 6:35. Right-hander Easton McGee (3-2, 6.75 ERA) will toe the bump for Hudson Valley against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Spinners.
The Renegades return home on Monday, July 30th when they open a three-game series and homestand against the Lowell Spinners beginning at 7:05. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
