Doubleheader sweep
June 3, 2006 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
After sitting through 24 hours of rain, the Lancaster Barnstormers swept a pair from the Newark Bears, 10-5, and 4-0, Saturday night at waterlogged Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
With Atlantic City being rained out Saturday afternoon, the sweep put the Barnstormers (20-10) two games ahead of the Surf in the Southern Division race.
Travis Hake went 3-for-4 and broke a scoreless tie with a bases-loaded single in the top of the fourth in the opener. Jason Bowers added a two-run homer in the top of the seventh.
Brian Whitaker (3-1) allowed six hits, five for extra bases in 5 1/3 innings to record the win. Charlie Weatherby, after giving up a double and a walk, retired the final five batters.
In the nightcap, Denny Harriger (4-1) fired a seven-hitter as Lancaster completed the doubleheader sweep. The 36-year old right-hander never allowed a Newark runner to reach third base, and only two got as far as second. He walked none and struck out three in posting Lancaster?s first complete game of the season.
Fernando Rijo (0-2) also went the distance, striking out 11. Lancaster?s first run crossed the plate in the second on a third strike wild pitch to Steve Van Note. Hake added a pair of RBI singles, and Chris Van Rossum capped the scoring with a line drive homer to right in the top of the sixth.
