
Bears drop game one of doubleheader, 10-5

NEWARK, NJ - June 3, 2006 - The Newark Bears fell to the Lancaster Barnstormers in game one of a doubleheader Saturday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium 10-5. With the loss, Newark has now dropped six straight games to fall to 9-19.
Barnstormers second baseman Travis Hake led the way going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Hake got Lancaster on the board in the top of the fourth inning when he hit a two-run scoring single with bases loaded. The Barnstormers then added two more runs in the inning when shortstop Jason Bowers reached on an error. Bowers ended the day 1-for-3 including a two run home run in the top of the seventh inning.
The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when shortstop Jack Santora led off with a double and later came around to score on a groundout by right fielder Will Pennyfeather. Newark cut the game to 8-5 after a two-run home run by catcher Jeremy Booth, his first of the season, in the bottom of the fifth inning, and two run scoring doubles by third baseman Lipso Nava and center fielder Al Benjamin in the bottom of the sixth. Pennyfeather ended the game 1-for-3 with a double, run scored, and RBI.
Bears starter David Shepard (1-5) took the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits in five innings, while Barnstormers starter Brian Whitaker (3-1) earned the win yielding five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Bears will start Fernando Rijo (0-1) in game two, while Denny Harriger will take the mound for the Barnstormers.
