Double Header Between Sanford And Vermont Goes Unfinished

Sanford Mainers News Release


Sanford, ME- The Mainers (21-15) and Vermont (24-13) had two rain outs to make up, one at each home ball park. June 25th was a wash out that was previously scheduled for Goodall park and July 23rd was a rain out as well that was previously scheduled for Montpelier Rec Park. So we played two 7 inning ball games today at Goodall Park, well the rain made that one.

Game One:

Mainers were the road team for game one and we got underway just after 3:30 pm local time and the Vermont Mountaineers plated 3 runs in the 2nd inning against starter Jeff Singer (1-1), at one point during the early going 5 of the 7 hits by Vermont had not left the infield including a couple of bunt singles mixed in with 3 infield singles. Singer allowed 12 hits and 5 runs, walked 1 and struck out 1 moving his ERA to 3.99 on the season. Tyler Barss was called on in relief of Singer working 1 inning with 1 strikeout.

The Mountaineers were led by Chandler Brock finishing 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, Jack Parenty with his 6th RBI of the season during a 1-for-3 day, Blake Tiberi drove in his 10th RBI of the year and finished 1-for-2 and Casey Rodrique went 1-for-3 with an RBI (8) as well.

The Mainers could not strike back, scoring only 1 run in the top of the 5th on back-to-back doubles Matt Pagano (Marist) led off the inning with a 2-2 count double finishing his day 2-for-3 gaining 3 points with his batting average to .244, and Nick Lovullo (Holy Cross) knocked in Pagano from second with a double as will plating his 5th RBI of the season. The Mainers finished with 8 hits and left 8 runners on base, Dan Hetzel (URI) went 1-for-3, Kevin Stypulkowski completed a 1-for-3 afternoon, Drake Parker (Vanderbilt) finished 1-for-3, and Caden Bailey (Georgia State) went 1-for-3 as well. Vermont improves to 4-and-0 against the Mainers this season.

The Vermont Mountaineers move 2.5 games up in first place on top of the Sanford Mainers in the Northern Division by the final score of 5-to-1.

Game two:

Mainers were the home team once again and Nick Poore (Boston College) got the start in game two of the double-header against Vermont. The lefty looked outstanding in his first three innings after an early hiccup giving up 1 run in the first inning after giving up a leadoff single to center field by Colin Lyman, Nick Solak grounded back to the pitcher after Lyman stole second base for the first out moving Lyman to third, Blake Tiberi plated his second RBI of the day both by way of a sac fly bringing in Lyman to make it 1-to-0 after 1 inning of play.

The Mainers answered back in the bottom of the second with a 1 out single to right field by Matt Pagano. Sam Dexter (So. Maine) got a base knock to center field moving Pagano to second and Kendall Patrick (Michigan) was hit-by-pitch for the league leading 11th time this season to load the bases. The Mainers made it count on a sac-fly RBI by Matt Harris bringing home Pagano to tie it up after two innings.

Poore worked a scoreless top 3rd, then the Mainers bats brought 7 batters to the plate in the bottom of the 3rd driving in two runs to take a 3-to-1 lead. Drake Parker led off with a bunt single, Nick Lovullo reached on an infield single, Caden Bailey moved Parker to third and Lovullo to second on a perfectly executed sac bunt and Cory Raley brought both Parker and Lovullo home on a line drive single to left field giving the Mainers a 2 run lead.

The skies opened up and rain began to fall at Goodall Park postponing action until Thursday (7/31) with first pitch of the continuation of these game in the top of the 4th inning set for 4:30 pm, and the regularly scheduled match up, the final one of the season, between the Vermont Mountaineers and the Sanford Mainers to be played at 6:30 pm.

The Mainers lead 3-to-1 after 3 innings in game two with 6 total hits and the bottom of the order Matt Harris (St. John's) along with Walker Pennington (TCU) and Drake Parker expected to be the first three to bat once we get this game underway on Thursday.
