Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland Winter Hawks' European forwards Ivan Dornic (DOOR-nick) and Martin Bucek (BEW-sick) have told the team they both intend to fly back to Europe Thursday. An afternoon flight has been booked for both of them.

Dornic told Hawks' coach Mike Williamson last Thursday he wanted to either be moved to another team in the WHL or he wanted to return to his Czech Republic homeland. Winter Hawks General Manager Ken Hodge tried to trade Dornic all day yesterday, Tuesday, and this morning, but got no offers. Dornic told the team today he wanted to go back to Slovakia Thursday.

Bucek met with team officials today and said he wanted to go home as well.

Dornic did not play last weekend in Portland's 2-1 overtime loss in Spokane on Friday and in the Hawks' 6-4 loss to Tri-Cities Saturday after telling Williamson of his intentions the day before the team left on the road trip.

Bucek played a regular shift in both games.

Today's moves, including the trade of goalie Kevin Opsahl to Spokane, leave the Hawks with 21 players (12 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goalies).

Portland will host Kamloops on Friday at 7:00 in Memorial Coliseum and travel to Everett to play the Silvertips on Saturday at 7:05.
