Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release

HIDALGO, TX: March 1, 2005 – The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 welcome a pair of new members assigned to the squad by the af2, as they add wide receiver/defensive back Mario Butler and lineman Jesse Mayfield to the 2005 roster.

"I had an opportunity to work out Mario and I was impressed with his all-around athletic abilities," said Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy. "As for Mayfield, he has good reach and that will benefit our pass rush."

Butler is a 6'0" 190-pound native of Atlanta Georgia and is looking for his first season of professional football. He attended the Memphis State University and Fort Valley University before returning home to become a student-athlete at Clark Atlanta University. The 24 year-old out of North Atlanta High School was with the CAU Panthers for two seasons (2002-2003) and combined for 58.5 tackles (48 solo) over his career, including 3 tackles for a loss and an interception.

Mayfield is another player looking for his first shot of professional football and brings in a Dorados connection. The 6'5" 285-pound lineman played high school football with earlier assigned Dorado Antoine Murphy at Ben Davis High School at his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. He earned Prep Football All-American honors and was a highly noted recruit by several Indiana publications coming out of Ben Davis, leading to a college career at the University of Wisconsin (Madison, WI). Mayfield was a member of the Badgers program from 1999-2001. He was a reserve on the defensive line most of his time with the Badgers and only lettered during the 2002 season.

The duo of Butler and Mayfield places the Dorados roster with 23 members announced to the 2005 squad, joining Brian Baker (QB), Darvell Bivens (WR/DB), John Bradley (OL/DL), Dwight Counter (WR/DB), J.R. Davies (QB), Sterling Finney (WR/DB), Marquis Floyd (WR/DB), Wil Goff (OL/DL), Will Goodloe (OL/DL), Josh Kellett (QB), Marquis Landrom (WR/DB), Joseph Lemberg (OS), Moses Lewis (TBD), Travis McAlpine (WR/DB), Kenny McClain (OL/DL), Ben McCombs (DE, FB/LB), David Morrill (FB/LB), Antoine Murphy (OL/DL), Pierre Thomas (WR/DB) and Josh Tubbs (OL/DL). Media members seeking an interview with Butler, Mayfield or Coach Guy are encouraged to contact Chris Due with the Dorados at 956-843-5656.
