Macon Knights News Release
MACON, Ga. â The Macon Knights have been assigned the first-ever international player in the team's five-year history as Derek Watson was selected in arenafootball2's annual international draft.
The Knights will utilize the international player rule this year, which allows teams to add two international players to their practice squad, and include one of those players on the active roster, in addition to the regular allotment of players (21 on full roster, 19 active).
"It betrays you not to take advantage of the international draft," said Mike Hold, head coach of the Knights. "We targeted Derek in the draft and if we didn't get him we weren't going to take anyone else. We think he is someone that can not only fill our international status but also contribute as an everyday player."
Watson (6-2, 215, St. Mary's â Canada) will enter his first season in the professional ranks after finishing his collegiate career in 2004 at St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Watson, a defensive back/linebacker in college, played in two National Championship games with St. Mary's including the Huskies' 2002 Vanier Cup win (National Championship game).
In his career at St. Mary's, Watson appeared in 22 games recording 44.5 tackles, four interceptions, 16 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was named a 2004 Atlantic University (conference) Defensive All-Star.
The Knights will continue to assemble their 2005 roster by holding an open tryout Saturday, March 5th at SportsTowne â the team's official practice and training facility. Registration will begin at 10:00 am.
Don't miss the action of eight great home games as the Knights kickoff the 2005 season on Friday, April 1st against the Florida Firecats. Season ticket packages are on sale now starting at just $56 and five-game plans start at just $45.
