Tulsa Talons News Release
TULSA, Okla. - The arenafootball2 (af2) league office has officially re-assigned WR/LB Toby Moeves and assigned WR/DB Don McGee and FB/LB Chris McIver and Mark Pierce.
WR/LB Toby "Moves" Moeves (6'0, 200 lbs, 2-years) joins the Talons for another season. Last season, Moeves recorded 2 rushes for 8 yards, 34 catches for 316 yards and 5 touchdowns, 1 kickoff return, 38 total tackles (22 solo), 1 quarterback hurry, 3 interceptions for 18 yards and 7 pass deflections in 12 games. Prior to the Talons, Moeves played for the af2 Louisville Fire in 2003. During off-season, Moeves is the Receivers Coach at Moorehead State University, the same college he graduated from.
"Toby returns to us this year in a slightly different role. He is a guy we are going to look at putting in a couple different positions. He played mainly WR/LB for us last year, but he has the capability to play the OS position as well. We will try him at both in camp and see what we feel is the best fit for him on our team. Regardless where he ends up, Toby should have a great season for us," stated Offensive Coordinator/Player Personnel, Coach Allner.
WR/DB Don McGee (5'11, 205 lbs, Rookie) also joins the Talons after serving time with the af2 Rio Grande Valley Dorados. McGee only played in one game for the Dorados due to his late arrival. Prior to af2, McGee played for the NFL-Europe Amsterdam Admirals and the Cologne Centurions. Prior to his pro career, the Dallas native was a part of the football and track programs at the University of North Texas. In April 2003, McGee signed as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys. Although he only got as far as being on the practice squad, the Scottish Claymores drafted McGee in the seventh round of the NFL Europe Free Agent Draft. Shortly after, McGee was traded to Amsterdam.
"Don McGee possesses great cover skills, as well as the speed and quickness we are looking for at our DS position. He spent past of the 2003 season with the Dallas Cowboys and will look to make an immediate impact for us. I can't wait to watch him perform," stated Coach Allner. FB/LB
Chris McIver (6'2, 275 lbs, 1-year) joins the Talons after serving time with the af2 Rio Grande Valley Dorados. Last season, McIver recorded 8 rushes for 12 yards and 1 touchdown, 14 total tackles (9 solo), 1 tackle for loss for 7 yards, 1 sack for 7 yards, 1 quarterback hurry and 1 pass deflection in 7 games. The Ft. Knox, Kentucky native grew up in San Antonio. He attended college at the University of North Texas from 1999-2002. McIver recorded 213 total tackles, 10 sacks, 17 tackles-for-loss and 3 pass deflections. McIver earned Sun Belt Conference Second Team All-Conference honors, defensive captain and was a five-time Defensive Player of the Game during his senior year. In 2001, McIver was awarded the Bill Bishop Award as the most outstanding defensive lineman and earned Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors. McIver was also a part of the UNT's 2003 New Orleans Bowl Championship Team. McIver signed a contract with the CFL Montreal Alouettes, but was released.
"Chris brings us a very unique combination of size, strength, speed and quickness to our FB/LB position. Chris and Corky Martin will be one of the toughest FB/LB combinations in the league. They are both high energy guys who play every down like it's their last," stated Coach Allner.
FB/LB Mark Pierce (6'0, 255 lbs, Rookie) joins the Talons after playing for Head Coach Houston Nutt of the University of Arkansas. Pierce was in the public eye more than most due to his personal life. The Sporting News ranked Pierce as the top fullback in the nation. As a punishing lead blocker, Pierce's devastating hits helped the team rank among the nation's elite rushing units. In 36 games, Pierce carried the ball 98 times for 460 yards (4.7 avg) and 11 touchdowns, adding 257 yards for two touchdowns on 26 catches (9.9 avg). This is the first step in Pierce's journey as a professional football player.
"Pierce is a good all-around fullback who can catch the ball out of the backfield and protect the quarterback from the blindside blitz," stated Sporting News.
"Mark Pierce is a first year arena football player from the University of Arkansas. I first saw Mark when I attended the Dallas Desperado's training camp in January. The first thing I thought when I saw him was that he reminded me of Corky Martin. He is extremely quick and has the type of explosion I like at the FB/LB position. With Corky, McIver and Mark I feel we will have an amazing trio at this position for the upcoming season. I guarantee the fans are going to love watching Mark play," stated Coach Allner.
The Tulsa Talons kick-off their 2005 season on April 1st at the Amarillo Civic Center versus af2's new arrival, the Amarillo Dusters.
