DORADOS ASSIGNED ANOTHER SW MISSOURI ST. PRODUCT
BRENT WITHERS TO JOIN DORADOS
HIDALGO, TX: March 16, 2004 â The Rio Grande Valley Dorados of arenafootball2 (af2) were assigned defensive specialist Brent Withers to their inaugural 2004 squad by the af2 offices.
"I watched Brent in some workouts and his defensive skills stood out and caught my eye," said Dorados Offensive Coordinator Rodney Blackshear. "He is a physical defensive specialist, who shows outstanding coverage skills and is confident in his abilities."
Like assigned lineman Karleton Thomas, Withers attended Southwest Missouri State University. He spent his junior (1999) and senior (2000) seasons at SMS combining for 116 tackles (79 unassisted, 37 assisted) and 5 interceptions in 21 games. In 1999, Withers played in 10 games and collected 44 tackles (32 unassisted, 12 assisted) as a safety and tied for second on the squad in interceptions with 2. A team captain, Withers had 72 tackles (47 unassisted, 25 assisted), 3 interceptions, 4 tackles for a loss and a sack in 2000.
Withers was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, but was raised in Edmond, Oklahoma and attended Santa Fe High School. He set the SFHS school single-season record for rushing yards with 1,100 and was named all-district as a senior. Withers graduated and enrolled as a student-athlete at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. He earned all-conference honors as a sophomore in 1998 at NEO before transferring to Southwest Missouri State.
Withers is the 22nd player the Dorados have announced on their roster, joining Tracy Archer (WR/LB), Marcus Bradley (def. specialist), Gary Briggs (WR/DB) Will Burch (QB), Spencer Conley (OL./DL), Tim Cook (OL/DL), Nick Davis (def. specialist), Kevin De Los Santos (OL/DL), Michael Duncan (WR/DB), Rico Gardner (WR/LB), Abel Gonzalez (QB) Preston Hartfield (WR/DB), Eric Houle (K), Raymond James (OL/DL), Herman Lovett (FB/LB), Brent McDonald (FB/LB), Jason Null (FB/LB), Manwell Talbert (WR/LB), Anthony Terrell (WR/DB), Karleton Thomas (OL/DL) and Donte Wells (WR/DB). Dorados Training Camp opens up Thursday morning at Hidalgo High School.
