Kansas City Monarchs News Release

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - It was First Responders Night at T-Bones Stadium, as the team and nearly 5,500 fans honored our local heroes. Despite police officers being among the first responders in attendance, the T-Bones were able to rob Chicago of a win, beating the Dogs 4-3 in extra innings.

The T-Bones started their assault on the Dogs early. In the bottom of the first inning, lead-off hitter Dylan Tice singled down the line to reach base. That was followed by a towering shot by Mason Davis that bounced off the left-field wall and allowed Tice to race around the bases from first and score the team's first run of the game. The hit was Kansas City's 130th double this season and the team's 196th extra-base hit. Later in the inning, a Colin Walsh sac fly to shallow left field gave Davis the chance to reach home and make the score 2-0 Kansas City.

The Dogs waited a few innings to get into the game. With a ground-rule double off T-Bones starting pitcher Hunter Adkins in the top of the fifth, Chicago's Kenny Wilson hit his 10th RBI of the season to score Dalton Blaser, who had doubled, to make the score 2-1. But three strikeouts in the inning for Adkins kept the Dogs from gaining any more ground.

The Dogs weren't done yet though, and the sixth inning proved to be game-changing. A Rubi Silva triple that dropped into deep left field allowed Joe Benson to score from first after he had reached on a single. Silva's game-tying RBI was followed with a left-field single by Tony Rosselli that brought home Silva from third and allowed the Dogs to take over the lead for the first time in the series.

In the top of the eighth, the T-Bones battled back, but not enough. Kansas City's Adrian Nieto singled and Alay Lago reached on a walk. Keith Curcio then doubled to right field, which brought Adrian Nieto home to even up the game 3-3. Lago, who advanced to third on Curcio's RBI, later tried to reach home on a fly ball from Tice, but was thrown out at the plate, ending the eighth and preventing the T-Bones from re-gaining the lead.

The T-Bones kept the score tied through the end of nine and went into extra innings for the eighth time this season - and the second time this week.

Looking for a walk-off in the tenth, Nieto lined the ball up the middle for a single. Next batter up, Alay Lago hit a shot to third that allowed him to reach first and pushed Nieto to second. With no outs, a Keith Curcio bunt loaded the bases. The Dogs tried to halt any more damage, bringing in Taylor Grover as a new pitcher in place of Tommy Thorpe.

Back to the top of the order, Tice hit a game-winning shot down the left-field line that barely stayed fair but allowed Nieto to score and win the game. The Dogs weren't happy, but the call stood and the T-Bones won in walk-off fashion 4-3.

Adkins worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up six hits and three runs with six hits. Recent addition Adam Bleday worked 1 2/3 innings in relief, followed by Jackson Lowery and Joe Filomeno for one inning each. Joe Filomeno (4-1) is credited with the win and Tommy Thorpe (2-4) gets the loss.

The T-Bones maintain their second-place spot in the League with a 43-22 record. They'll look to win the final game of the three-game series with the Dogs Sunday at 1:05 pm at T-Bones Stadium. It will be "Kids Take Over the Ballpark Day," with catch on the field from 12:15-12:30 pm. Kids Take Over the Ballpark is an event where kids who have been signed up at previous games take over various jobs around the ballpark.
