Kitchener Rangers News Release
KITCHENER WATERLOO - This year's Don Cameron Potato Night kicks off the 20th February Potato Blitz, sharing the gift of food with our neighbours in need. Local broadcaster, Don Cameron and the Kitchener Rangers invite hockey fans to drop off donations and potatoes on their way into the game at The Aud, Friday January 23rd, 7:30 pm, when the Rangers take on the Kingston Frontenacs.
Adding to the fun of this year's campaign, Team Blitz is inviting fans and community members to share a #SpuddyUnselfie on Twitter. For every #SpuddyUnselfie shared with @HOFKW, Pfenning Organics will donate a 3 lb. bag of spuds - up to 800 lbs.
"Don Cameron has given so much to this event that it will be terrific to have Don and the Rangers lead the way with our first #SpuddyUnselfie" explains John Neufeld, Executive Director.
What can your #SpuddyUnselfie look like? Show us your Spuddy spirit with your best Blitz look - hats and, of course, some burlap. Show us your favourite potato dish/recipe. Or simply share a pic of you with a message about why you support Spuddy's February Potato Blitz.
The February Potato Blitz Campaign focuses community efforts on sharing the gift of food with our neighbours in need by collecting potatoes and donations throughout the month of February. Why potatoes? Each year, House of Friendship uses over 300,000 pounds of potatoes in its emergency food hampers and food assistance for program patrons. When the potatoes run out, cash donations are used to buy more potatoes at a special rate, stretching donor dollars even further!
Don Cameron Potato Night is the first of three February Potato Blitz events. On Saturday February 7th, shoppers in the KW area can also "take a shot at hunger" and drop off donations and spuds at 26 participating super markets locations during the Super Market Blitz, 9 am - 3 pm.
Lastly, share the gift of food at the Community Potato Lunch, Friday February 27th, 12 pm - 1 pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Kitchener. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a delicious potato lunch - a wonderful array of potato dishes that will be sure to satisfy. There is no cost for lunch, but donations will be gratefully accepted.
At other times, donations and spuds can be given at the Emergency Food Hamper Program, 807 Guelph St., Kitchener, (Mon. - Fri., 9 am - 4 pm) and at the Charles Street Men's Hostel, 63 Charles St., E., Kitchener (anytime). Donations can also be made on line at www.houseoffriendship.org or mailed to House of Friendship, P.O. Box 1837, Station C, Kitchener, N2G 4R3.
To find out how your group, faith community or workplace can share the gift of food and host its own February Potato Blitz event, please contact Dawn Gill at 519-742-8327 x119 or visit www.houseoffriendship.org.
