Dominant Pitching, Timely Hitting Pave Way to Indians 3-0 Win

July 30, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release

Spokane, WA -The Indians entered Sunday night's game looking for their second straight series win, but faced a daunting challenge in the form of Yakima starting pitcher Daniel Watts (2-3). The league-leader in ERA proved every bit the worthy adversary, holding the Indians scoreless through five innings, but the resilient Spokane bats broke through in the sixth on their way to a 3-0 victory over the Bears in front of 4,543 fans at Avista Stadium for Youth Baseball Day & Pre-Game Youth Clinic presented by LEO's Photography, 103.9 BOB FM, and 790 KJRB.

Gabriel Roa and Patrick Cantwell led off the game's deciding frame with back-to-back singles and Cam Schiller followed with a picture perfect bunt down the third base line. Watts darted off the mound and fielded the bunt cleanly, but his throw sailed into rightfield, allowing Roa to score from second. Royce Bolinger followed with a line drive to Bears rightfielder Mike Lang, who airmailed his throw past catcher Steven Rodriguez as Cantwell scampered home on Yakima's second consecutive error. Ryan Rua topped off the Indians big inning with an RBI double into the left field corner.

Spokane starter Connor Sadzeck extended his tightfisted ways at Avista Stadium, allowing no hits and no runs in four innings while striking out seven Bears. Richard Alvarez (1-2) picked up his first win of the season with three scoreless frames and Joseph Burns and Josh McElwee each tossed a perfect inning to finish the Indians second straight shutout.

Rua finished the game with three hits, Schiller chipped in two, and Roa, Cantwell, and Smerling Lantigua each had a base knock in the win.
