Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD - A thrilling staff performance from the Sanford Mainers (5-4) kept the New Bedford Bay Sox (1-7) off the board Sunday night, as they defeated New Bedford 1-0.
The Mainers Cole Whitney (St. Johns) got the start, and dictated the pace of the ballgame in his time on the mound. Whitney threw five innings, and allowed just two hits and no runs and collected six strikeouts in the no decision.
Whitney went opposite Bay Sox starter Gabe Rodriguez (Eastern Florida State), who mastered the art of scattering base runners. Rodriguez went five-and-two-thirds and spread six hits and walk across his start, not allowing more than a hit in each inning he appeared.
The Moose finally punched through offensively in the 8th to take a 1-0 lead. Zach Jancarski (Maryland) singled to open the frame and quickly advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk put on Chris Gaetano (Monmouth), Todd Czinege (Villanova) singled up the middle to score Jancarski from second.
Although Sanford had the lead, they Bay Sox refused to go away. Andrew Penner (Los Angeles Valley) doubled with a man away in the 9th to get on and was promptly joined on-base by Keith Klebart via a hit by pitch. A wild pitch and an intentional walk later, and with the bases loaded, Robbie Doring (Dayton) hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop which hit Klebart, standing stationary about 10 feet from the second base bag.
Klebart had stepped in front of the baseball to screen Mainers shortstop John Cresto (Santa Clara), a situation that would have made Cresto's job of a turning a double play that much more difficult had it not struck the base runner. Jonah Normandeau (Maine Orono) quickly retired the next batter to get out of the jam and end the game.
Sanford travels to Laconia Monday night to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats for their second visit of the season to Robbie Mills Park. The Mainers lost 10-0 the last time they traveled to Laconia.
First pitch is at 6:05 PM, with the on-air pregame show beginning at 5:50 PM on the NECBL Broadcast Network and the Legends in Sanford 1220 AM and 102.3 FM.
