Schooners Adrift in Loss to Ocean State
Groton - The Mystic Schooners lost a tough one to the Ocean State Waves 4-2.
The Schooners were unable to capitalize in the first inning, leaving a man in scoring position. But they were able to get the first run of the game on the board in the 2nd. Zach Goldstein was hit by a pitch and then advanced to third on Casey Bakers single. Goldstein was able to score during CJ Moore's at-bat when pitcher Jordan Fulbright threw a wild pitch.
The Waves were able to break open the game in the fourth. With one out Gian Martellini hit a hard line drive that third baseman Chase Lunceford was unable to control. Ryan Blanton, who was on first, was thrown out by Taishi Terashima trying to advance to third for the second out of the inning. Next up, Matt Cogen, was able to beat out a ground ball to the shortstop Nick Mascelli keeping the inning alive for the Waves. Dean Lockery blooped a single into centerfield that scored Cogen. Nick Angelini came up next and hit a deep 2-RBI double to the gap in right-centerfield putting the Waves in the lead 3-1.
The Waves would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Grant Williams walked and Jarrett Hood doubled scoring Williams. They would bring in Robert Hitt close out the game in the bottom of the ninth. The Schooners got an RBI single from Ramiz scoring Goldstein but couldn't mount a full comeback and Hitt got the save.
Waves starter Jordan Fulbright got the win going 4 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 1. The Bullpen for the Waves consisting of Nicholas DiEva, Logan Lessard, and Robert Hitt came up huge, shutting down the Schooners bats. They allowed just 2 hits and 1 run in 5 innings of combined work.
The Schooners fall to 4-6 with the loss. They have Monday and Tuesday off but will be back in action Wednesday versus the Valley Blue Sox at Fitch High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
