Dogs Rally Falls Short in Fireworks Saturday Loss

Rosemont, Ill. - A Grant Heyman game-winning solo home run was the difference in a see-saw affair Saturday night at Impact Field as the Dogs lost to the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6-5 for their twelfth straight defeat.

Heyman's home run, which was his second of the series and his fifth of the year, came off Chicago left-hander Tommy Thorpe on the 42nd pitch Thorpe threw in relief, and tied the Winnipeg left fielder for the league lead in long balls.

The night began in similar fashion for the Goldeyes when Reynaldo Rodriguez popped a two-run home run to left field to deliver the keynote in the top of the first inning. Chicago third baseman Treysen Vavra answered with a solo shot of his own to left in the bottom of the frame.

Chicago would then take their first lead of the game on the strength of two second inning runs. The Dogs collected two hits in the inning despite only one ball leaving the infield. Jonathan Moroney led off with a base hit, followed by a Dalton Blaser walk. After a Matt Telesco fielder's choice moved both runners up a base, a Michael Baca fielder's choice scored Moroney.

Moroney slid in safely at home plate underneath a tag from Winnipeg catcher Kevin Garcia and Baca reached first safely. The inning continued when Ryan Gyrion drove in his first run of the year with an infield single, and ended when the next batter, Zach Racusin, grounded into a double play.

Winnipeg would score twice more in the sixth inning thanks to a two out rally that began with a two-base error by Vavra that allowed Josh Mazola to reach. Two batters later, following an RBI double from Andrew Sohn and and RBI single from Victor Cruzado, the Goldeyes had recaptured the lead at 4-3.

After Winnipeg added another tally in their half of the seventh, the Dogs came to the plate in the bottom of the frame down 5-3. With two men in scoring position, and two outs, Chicago manager Butch Hobson brought in Matt Dean to pinch hit for Craig Maddox against Goldeyes lefty Josh Blanco. Dean smashed a two-run single to right to tie the game, registering the first hit of the season off Blanco.

After Heyman's big fly delivered the go-ahead blow in the top of the ninth, Chicago again put two men in scoring position in the bottom half, but a Vavra ground out and a Dean fly out ended the threat. Victor Capellan earned his second save of the series and his seventh of the year by wriggling out of the jam.

With his home run in the first inning, Vavra extended his season-long hitting streak to 14 games.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game set with a 1:05 first pitch on a Family Sunday from Impact Field. Josh Goossen-Brown will make the start for the Dogs, while Charle Rosario starts for Winnipeg.
