Dogs Lose 6-3 on Chilly Night in Rosemont

Rosemont, Ill. - A four-run top of the fourth that chased Chicago starter Connor Root from the game after just two and one third innings helped to down the Dogs Friday night as the team lost their eleventh game in a row, 6-3 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
On a chilly night from Impact Field that registered a first pitch temperature of just 57 degrees, the first five innings of Friday's ballgame were a slog. The two teams took two hours and three minutes to complete the opening five frames, with the respective staffs combining to allow 13 hits, four hit batsmen, and three walks.
Winnipeg left fielder Grant Heyman delivered the keynote for the Goldeyes, popping a solo home run over the right field wall in the top of the first. The Goldeyes four-run fourth began with the first five Winnipeg batters reaching base. Heyman doubled, Reynaldo Rodriguez walked, and Reggie Abercrombie singled to load the bases for Kevin Garcia. Garcia then drew a walk to force in a run, before Josh Mazzola plated two with a double. Later in the inning, Jordan Ebert contributed a run-scoring double of his own.
Dogs starter Connor Root was charged with all four runs in the innings, and ultimately allowed five runs over two and one third innings in his third start of the year.
Chicago would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI single from newly-signed first baseman Dalton Blaser and a sacrifice fly from Wilfredo Rodriguez.
The two teams exchanged single runs once more in the game, but with the lead for Winnipeg at 6-3, Goldeyes closer Victor Capellan worked a one, two, three ninth for his sixth save of the year.
Mazzola went 2-5 for the Goldeyes with a pair of doubles, and two runs driven in in his 335th consecutive American Association game. The game now gives Mazzola the longest such streak in league history.
With a single in the first inning, Vavra extended his hitting streak to start the year to 13 games. Vavra now has multiple hits in six straight games for the Dogs.
Winnipeg stole seven bases in the game, with Jordan Ebert and Reynaldo Rodriguez each swiping a pair.
The series between the Goldeyes and Dogs will resume Saturday night at Impact Field with Michael Wagner making his second start for Chicago and Alex Boshers getting the nod for Winnipeg.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the Crowne Plaza Pregame Show airing at 6:45 p.m. The game will be broadcast at www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts.
