Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON - Ramon Flores had three hits, and five Charleston pitchers combined on a two-hitter in a 4-1 victory over Hickory in front of 3,758 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Sunday evening.
With the victory, the RiverDogs have won three in a row for the first time since mid May and six of eight overall in improving to 22-27, 48-71 overall, while Hickory lost its fourth straight, dropping to 26-23, 66-51 overall.
Charleston struck for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second against Hickory starter Joe Van Meter, highlighted by a two-out Eduardo Sosa double and a RBI single by Jose Mojica.
Heavy rainfall entered the area with one out in the top of third, stopping play for 57 minutes.
Neither starter pitched after the delay, as Charleston's Manny Barreda worked 2.1 innings giving up only one Hickory base hit, while Van Meter (5-5) permitted the second-inning run on two RiverDogs hits in 2.0 innings.
The RiverDogs offense, however, was not slowed by the stoppage, notching a pair of runs off reliever Kevin Johnson in growing the lead to 3-0. Kevin Mahoney lined a RBI single, and Shane Brown scored later in the inning on a two-out wild pitch.
Hickory scored a run in the fourth off Francisco Rondon via a two-out RBI double from Alejandro Selen, trimming the score to 3-1.
Charleston scored for the third straight inning in the bottom half, as Jeff Farnham doubled, took third on a groundout and came plateward on another Johnson wild pitch for a 4-1 advantage.
Rondon tossed 1.2 innings of relief, while Mike Recchia followed with 3.0 perfect relief innings highlighted by three strikeouts. Aaron Dott dealt a scoreless eighth, and Mark Montgomery penned a scoreless ninth to get his 11 th save in as many chances.
Game two is set for Monday at 7:05 p.m., with the RiverDogs sending right-hander Shane Greene (4-11, 4.00 ERA) to the firing line against Hickory right-hander Cody Buckel (6-3, 2.55 ERA).
