Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD- The Hagerstown Suns (66-52, 26-22) blasted away the Lexington Legends (51-67, 16-32) on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium, 9-1. The Suns used 14 hits and committed just one error in the field en route to Hagerstown's fourth consecutive victory. Hagerstown is now (9-6) against the Lexington Legends in the 2011 season. In just two hours and 27 minutes, the Suns garnered the series advantage in the four game set after a triumph in the opener.
Suns LHP Ryan Demmin (3-2), the winning pitcher, was strong through 5.0 innings in which he allowed just one earned run on two hits, while walking a pair and striking out two.
Lexington leaped out with their only run of the game in the 1st frame as 1B Telvin Nash walked with two outs before C Ben Heath lazered a single into left field and 3B Mike Kvasnicka lined a soft line drive up the left field line to score Nash giving the Legends a 1-0 lead. After DH Tyler Burnett reached first base on an error by 1B Brett Newsome, Demmin stranded the bases loaded after getting RF Bryce Lane to sky out to CF Chris Curran.
Legends RHP Carlos Quevedo (7-5), the losing pitcher, tossed 4.0 innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits, while walking one and fanning three.
Hagerstown tied the game at 1-1 in the 4th inning when DH Kevin Keyes wrapped a single through the hole at shortstop to plate 3B Blake Kelso, who got aboard via a single up the middle. Keyes had a 4-for-4 day at the plate featuring four singles and Keyes' 48th RBI of the season.
The Suns added three more runs an inning later on an RBI single to left field by Kelso, a 4-6-3 double play by 2B Adrian Sanchez, and an RBI single smoked passed Kvasnicka at third base into left field.
Lexington RHP Murilo Gouvea surrendered five runs, four earned, on six hits through 6.0 stanzas.
Two more runs in act two came for Hagerstown in the 6th stanza. Curran, who missed hitting for the cycle by a double, on a 3-for-4, three runs scored, four RBI contest, crushed an RBI triple to the right center field gap that ricocheted off the wall. LF Wade Moore, who walked, came in to score. Curran was able to cross third base on the triple and dart to the plate because CF Jay Austin's throw sunk low to the cutoff man 2B Hector Rodriguez. The relay throw was ahead of Curran at home plate, but the lanky speedster steamrolled Heath, who allowed the ball to trickle out of his grasp, giving the Suns a 6-1 lead.
Curran cranked a three-run home run in the 8th inning, his second of the season, to completely bust the ballgame open. Newsome singled the other way to left field and Moore drew a walk preceding the four-bagger.
Suns RHPs Greg Holt and Colin Bates, both former UNC Tar Heels, combined for 4.0 scoreless innings in which they allowed three hits and struck out three.
Game Two at Municipal Stadium will feature a 7:05pm first pitch. Wall-to-wall radio broadcast coverage will begin with a 6:50pm Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-game Show on WJEJ AM 1240. The pitching matchup will bring Suns RHP Matt Swynenberg (5-1, 3.24) to the hill against Legends RHP Tanner Bushue (6-4, 4.28).
