Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
ABILENE, TX - Things started very well for Abilene on Wednesday night, but the ending belonged to Edinburg. After squandering a four-run lead, the Dogs failed to piece together their first three-game win streak of the season, losing to the Roadrunners 8-5.
Sean White became the 13th player to make his professional debut for the Dogs when he started on the hill. With some defensive help - Edinburg lost two runners at the plate in the second - White faced the minimum number of batters over the first two innings. But the Roadrunners got to the rookie for a run in the third before using four consecutive singles from Wilmer Pino, Carlos Hereaud, Derrick Perren, and Felix Molina to tie the game with a three-run fourth. White departed before the top of the fifth after allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out a pair over four innings in his professional debut.
In the bottom of the second, Chris Caves connected with his sixth homer of the season, a three run shot to left off Edinburg starter Aaron Tullo to give the Dogs the early advantage, 3-0. After Fogle walked and scored, the Dogs were off to an early 4-0 lead.
Braden Tullis entered a tie game in the fifth and walked the first batter he faced, Stantrel Smith. Smith, the league-leader in stolen bases, quickly swiped second and scored on Wilmer Pino's R.B.I. single, giving the Roadrunners their first lead, 5-4. Pino was 3-for-5 and scored a run.
Five different Abilene relievers threw one inning out of the bullpen on Wednesday. Dingeman tossed a perfect sixth, before Kevin Gelinas allowed an unearned run in the seventh to give Edinburg a 6-4 lead. Scott Vander Weg took over in the eighth and yielded three straight hits to start the inning. Tim Battle eventually singled in one of two eighth-inning runs and the Roadrunners had an 8-4 advantage.
The Dogs put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth but left the tying run at the plate when Wilson Batista - pinch hitting for Bryan Fogle - popped out to third base on the first pitch he saw.
The Roadrunners used four relievers after Aaron Tullo lasted only 11/3. Robert Roth picked up his first victory after tossing two shutout innings, allowing three hits and fanning one.
Derrick Perren helped pace the visiting offense, going 3-for-4 for a double and a pair of runs scored.
The same teams will wrap up the brief two-game series with a 7:05 first pitch on Thursday night. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com. The First Financial Pregame Show gets started at 6:55.
