Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
ABILENE, TX - The Prairie Dogs' pitching staff has caught the injury bug. Combine that with Adam Rowe shipping to the Atlantic League, and the Prairie Dogs have a need for starting pitching. Bobby Brown began filling those vacancies on Wednesday. The Prairie Dogs signed left-handed starter Sean White, right-handed starter Freddy Flores, and outfielder Austin Newell. Reece McGraw was traded to the Frontier League to make room for the acquisitions.
White will make his professional debut when he gets the start at Walt Driggers Field on Wednesday night. The left-hander is emerging from his senior season at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. During his final collegiate season, the New Jersey native appeared in 12 games (10 starters), winnings seven of his eight decisions and posting a 2.65 ERA. In 78 innings, the southpaw allowed 72 hits and struck out 71 batters.
Flores, a 38-year-old righty, appeared 12 times (11 starts) this season with El Paso of the American Association. He was 3-2 with a 5.29 ERA in 66.1 innings pitched with the Diablos, allowing 92 hits and 15 walks while striking out 39. Flores will start for the Dogs on Thursday.
Newell, acquired from the White Sands Pupfish, was in the midst of his second season in the Pecos League. In 251 at-bats in 2012, Newell, a left-handed hitter, was batting .422 with four home runs, 21 doubles, and 44 R.B.I.s.
Reece McGraw was released after four appearances with the Dogs. In two innings of relief, he allowed four runs on seven hits.
On Wednesday, the Dogs begin a two-game home series with the Edinburg Roadrunners. Tonight is the first Back to School Night at Walt Driggers Field. Students and faculty members of any age will receive a $3 general admission by showing their school ID at the gate. If you cannot make it to the park, hear the game on 106.9 KLGD beginning with the first Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
