Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Success Against the West With 20 of their final 27 games against fellow Western Conference teams, the Buccaneers can go in with the confidence gaining knowledge that they had had some decent success in conference play.
The Buccaneers are 8-6-2 against Western Conference teams, including a 5-1-1 record in their last seven games.
Des Moines has four with Sioux City, three Lincoln, Tri-City & Waterloo and two with Fargo, Omaha & Sioux Falls
Norlov Makes Impact
When a team takes a player in the third round of the Phase II draft they dream of that player having an impact on many games, and Swedish born forward Oskar Norlov did just that last Saturday. Norlov scored both of the Buccaneers' goals in a 2-1 win at Sioux Falls.
Norlov has played in the last four games since joining the Bucs in early January. He has 3pts (2g, 1)
Bucs Add "Major" Defenseman
After joining the team last weekend Finnish born defenseman Jimi Kuronen is expected to make his on-ice Buccaneers' debut this weekend. The 18 year old spent the first 35 games of the season with the Oshawa Generals of the Major Junior Ontario Hockey League registering 5pts (2g, 3a) and a +1 rating.
He previously played junior hockey in his native Finland and is a veteran of 55 international level games.
Kuronen and fellow Buccaneer Jarkko Parikka share the same advisor, who is also the father of current Minnesota Wild Eric Haula
Excellent Save Percentage
Buccaneer goaltenders Billy Christopoulos and Ryan Ruck have combined for a .923% save percentage in the seven games played in January. Ruck has a .929% and Christopoulos at .916.
The combined save percentage is fourth best in the USHL.
Home Sweet Home
Tanner Karty and Ryan Galt lead the Buccaneers with 16pts each in home games.
Nearing 30
Third year Buccaneer Tanner Karty has scored 28 goals in his 114 game career and is just two away from 30.
Get Out Early
Scoring that first goal has proven to be the key in most Buccaneers' games this season as the team is 8-2-1 (.773%) when scoring first as opposed to 5-15-2 (.273%).
The Buccaneers have won their last four games when scoring first.
Des Moines has been limited to only 17 first period goals, but have 67 the rest of the game.
Christopoulos Playing Well
Christopoulos has had six games this season in which he has made at least 40 saves.
Schueneman Standing Out
Veteran defenseman Corey Schueneman is a +9 with 6pts (1g, 5a) in the month of January.
