Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - LHP Rolando Viera delivered 6.2 strong innings on the hill for the Rox and RHP Jon Koch earned his fourth save of the season as Brockton defeated the Quebec Capitales 4-2 in front of a Campanelli Stadium crowd of 2,578. 2B Mike Scanzano finished the game 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the charge for the Rox, who scored in the first inning for the third straight game, and have yet to trail in the series. Viera struck out nine in the win and has fanned 31 batters in his last three starts (22.2 IP). Koch got Quebec 3B Eddie Lantigua, representing the go-ahead run for the Capitales, to fly out to end the game. The Rox will attempt their first series sweep of the season tomorrow at 7:05 PM.
SS Eugene Julien led off the game with a single for the Rox against RHP Gabe Ribas. Scanzano followed with a hit, and 3B Jake Daubert drove home a run with an RBI single to right. Later in the first, C Jason Radwan singled to right to make the game 2-0 in the Rox's favor. Brockton has scored nine runs in the first inning of the series and has taken the early first inning lead in each game. Capitale RF Benoid Emond drove home a run with a double in the second against Viera, breaking a 15-inning scoreless string for the left- hander. The Rox scored twice more in the fourth on RBI singles by Julien and Scanzano.
Viera left the game with a 4-2 lead but with runners at the corners and two outs in the seventh. RHP Wayne Lundgren got the final out of the inning, stranding runners on base, and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth. In the ninth, Koch came out of the bullpen for the first time since losing in relief last Wednesday. He gave up two singles and had to face the third and fourth hitters in the Quebec lineup, CF Goefrey Tomlinson and Lantigua. Tomlinson flied to the wall in right and Lantigua popped to center to end the game, giving the Rox their third straight win. The Rox are now 14-17 in 2006 and send RHP Brad Guy (1-1, 3.57 ERA) to the mound tomorrow night at Campanelli Stadium to face former Rox RHP Wayne Ough (1-2, 4.70 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
