Buffalo Bandits News Release
BUFFALO, NY (February 14, 2006) - Buffalo Bandits forward Mark Steenhuis and goaltender Steve Dietrich have been named to the East Division All-Star Reserves for the 2006 National Lacrosse League All-Star Game. The game will be held on Saturday, February 25 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. They will join Bandits forward John Tavares, who was named as a starter for the East Division.
Steenhuis, now in his fifth NLL season and his fourth with the Bandits, is second on the team with 25 points (13+12) in five games. The St. Catharines, Ont.-native was named Most Valuable Player of the 2004 NLL All-Star Game in Denver, when he scored seven points (6+1). Steenhuis also assisted on John Tavares' game-winning goal at the 2005 NLL All-Star Game in Calgary, Alta. Earlier this season, the 5-11, 195-pound Steenhuis won the Offensive and Overall Player of the Week awards for Week 3, after posting nine points (5+4) in the Bandits' season-opening 13-10 victory at Toronto.
Dietrich, whose 35 wins ranks first in Bandits' history, is 3-2 this season. He is also third in the NLL with a 9.45 goals-against average and second with a .820 save percentage. The 5-9, 240-pound Dietrich was named Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3, after stopping 56-of-67 shots at Toronto on January 13. A native of Kitchener, Ont., Dietrich was named to the reserves in the 2004 NLL All-Star Game but did not play due to injury.
The East Division All-Stars will be coached by Rochester Knighthawks head coach Ed Comeau and Philadelphia Wings head coach Lindsay Sanderson. The West Division All-Stars will be coached by Arizona Sting head coach Bob Hamley and Calgary Roughnecks head coach Chris Hall. As per league regulations, the first nine reserves of each team were selected by the respective coaches of each All-Star team. The league office then made the final three selections for each All-Star team.
The Bandits next home game is Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m. against the Minnesota Swarm and will be "Kids Night". All children 12 and under will receive free admittance to the game when accompanied by a full priced paying adult in the 300 level.
