Diaz's Home Run Lifts Goldeyes to Victory
August 16, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes weathered a late comeback from the Kansas City T-Bones Monday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, hanging on for a 9-7 win before 4,306 spectators.
Winnipeg's big inning of the game came in the fifth when the Fish put up five runs. However, it was Diaz's team-leading 19th home run of the season in the eighth inning that provided the winning runs.
Kansas City scored twice in the ninth inning, but Goldeyes closer Bobby Korecky was able to slam the door on the T-Bones after giving up the two-run single to Ray Sadler.
Diaz, Kevin West and Dee Brown all had three-hit nights for the Goldeyes, while Aharon Eggleston knocked in three runs. Luis Alen started the scoring for Winnipeg with a two-run home run of his own in the second inning.
Winnipeg starting pitcher Ace Walker tossed five innings for the Goldeyes and gets his sixth win of the season, despite surrendering three home runs.
Kevin Light was on the hook for seven Goldeyes runs and gets hit with his first loss of the season.
The win is the Goldeyes second in the row.
With the Joliet JackHammers splitting a doubleheader with the Lake County Fielders and the Rockford RiverHawks losing both games of a double dip against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Winnipeg now has sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northern League. The Fish are half a game up on Joliet and a game and a half up on Rockford.
Winnipeg and the Kansas City meet again Tuesday night in the second game of this three-game series. Game time is 7 p.m.
