Northern Leagues Pitcher And Player Of The Week

August 16, 2010 - Northern League (NL) News Release

Second baseman Jacob Blackwood of the Kansas City T-Bones was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Schaumburg Flyers pitcher Dustin Glant received the Northern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the period ending August 15th, 2010.

Blackwood, who is currently in-line to win the Northern League Triple Crown, batted .500 (14-for-28) with seven runs scored, two doubles, a league-high five home runs, and 11 RBI for the week. While hitting a home run on five different days, the highlight of the week was a four-hit, five-RBI performance Wednesday in a battle over first place versus the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the T-Bones 19-7 victory.

The 6-0, 210-pounder, is playing his fifth season of professional baseball and second with the T-Bones. He first signed with Kansas City on June 25th, 2009 and batted .288 over 63 games for K.C. in '09. In a break-out 2010 season, he currently leads the league in batting (.344), home runs (25), and RBI (73). The Northern League has not seen a Triple Crown winner since Anthony Lewis of the Duluth-Superior Dukes in 2000 accomplished the feat.

Blackwood was originally selected by the Florida Marlins in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft and played parts of four seasons in their organization (he was also drafted in the 40th round of the 2005 draft by the New York Mets, but did not sign). This marks the third time this season Blackwood has received the NL Player of the Week honor (May 31st and July 25th).

Glant, who has won more than a quarter of his team's victories in 2010, went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA during the week for the Flyers. In two starts, he hurled 15 innings yielding only three runs on 12 hits while striking out eight. On August 14th versus Joliet, he went the distance in a seven-inning affair earning his eighth victory of the season and third complete game. Earlier in the week he went eight innings allowing only three runs to the Rockford RiverHawks in a 4-3 Schaumburg victory.

Playing in his eighth season of professional baseball and second in the Northern League, Glant has already tied his win total of eight in 2009 with the Flyers. The right-hander was originally signed by Schaumburg on March 17th, 2009 as a free agent following six seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He currently ranks fourth in the Northern League in ERA (3.39) and is tied for fifth in the league in wins (8). Glant, an Indiana native, represented the Flyers on the 2010 Northern League All-Star Team .

Glant, a 6-2, 200-pounder, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 7th round of the 2003 Amateur Entry Draft. He primarily served as a reliever during his entire career in the D-Backs farm system starting only 16 games of his 264 appearances. He posted a 21-23 career record with a 5.21 ERA playing as high as Class AAA in 2007 and 2008. Over six seasons, he posted 51 career saves, including a career-high 18 for Yakima (Northwest League) in 2003. He played collegiately at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN).
