Fielders Split Doubleheader with Joliet
August 16, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Lake County Fielders News Release
ZION, Ill.-The Lake County Fielders (34-47) split a doubleheader with the Joliet JackHammers (40-40), playing two seven-inning games in Zion. The Fielders dropped the first game 7-2, before winning game two 4-1.
The Fielders pitching woes continued in game one. Ryan Falcon (3-3) began well in his first start of the season. He retired nine of the first ten batters he faced, including four strikeouts.
Jonathan Wyatt led off the fourth inning with a long home run to right field for the JackHammers. The red-hot Brad Corell doubled and JackHammers' slugger John Nelson followed with a two run home run, his 22nd of the season.
Brian McFall tried to spark the Fielders' offense with a solo home run to straightaway center in the bottom of the fourth, but the offense could not get going from there.
The JackHammers added two in the sixth and two more in the seventh off of the Lake County bullpen to take the 7-1 lead.
The Fielders did add one in the bottom of the seventh when Brain McFall scored on a Devin Anderson wild pitch, but that would be it for the Fielders.
Anderson (4-4) was very strong for the JackHammers, pitching the complete game, seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out one.
Garry Bakker (5-7) provided a much needed lift for the Fielders' pitching staff in game two. He made only one mistake, allowing a fourth inning home run to Freddie Thon.
The Fielders evened the game in the bottom of the inning when McFall hit a one out double and scored on a Cody Strait RBI single.
McFall came up big again in the bottom of the fifth, delivering the big blow with a long home run to straightaway center. With Guillermo Martinez already on second base, Joliet manager Chad Parker decided to walk Josh Short intentionally, but that move backfired.
McFall was 3-for-5, scoring four runs and driving in four RBI with his two home runs. He now has 15 for the season.
The big story in game two for the Fielders was Bakker. He threw all seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out a season high 11 batters.
The Fielders look to win again on Tuesday night. Ryan Bicondoa (LC) will face off against Todd Privett (JOL) at 7:00pm in Zion.
