On Wednesday, the Dominican Republic Men's National Team kicked off its 2022 World Cup Qualifying campaign with a 1-0 win over Dominica and SRFC goalkeeper Rafael Diaz was a key player in helping his side keep a clean sheet.
The first-round fixture in Group D was played at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in the Dominican Republic and a 52ndminute strike ultimately proved to be the difference.
The Indomitable Club's Rafael Diaz got the nod to start in net and did a superb job keeping Dominica from breaking through during the entirety of the match. This was Diaz's second straight start and second straight shutout while manning the goal for the D.R. On January 25, Rafa held Serbia scoreless in his first career start with the national team.
Next up for Diaz and the D.R. is a bout against Anguilla on Saturday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m. PT. The second round fixture will be available to stream live on Paramount +.
Joining Diaz on national team duty is SRFC playmaker Kharlton Belmar who earned his first-ever call-up to Grenada's National Team. Belmar - who could potentially earn his first international cap - is hoping to see minutes in Grenada's World Cup Qualifier on Thursday, March 25 against a formidable El Salvador side that is currently listed as 70thin the FIFA World Rankings. Kickoff is set for 7:25 p.m. PT and the match will be streaming live on Paramount +.
