Diamond Jaxx lose opener to Barons, 13-2

Birmingham, Ala. (April 30, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (9-11) drop game one of the five game series with the Barons (14-6), 13-2 on Thursday night. The Barons scored seven runs in the eighth inning to pad the win.

The Barons, who lead the North Division of the Southern League, continue their hot hitting. Birmingham knocked out Jaxx starter, Danny Christensen in the fourth inning and pounded out 17 hits in the game. The Barons lead the Southern League's North Division. They also lead the league in home runs with 24 on the year.

Barons left fielder David Cook went 2 for 5 on the night with two homeruns and five driven in. Gordan Beckham and John Shelby each racked up three-hit games. Birmingham hit six doubles in the game.

The Jaxx scored a run in the fifth inning on a passed ball and error by Barons' catcher, Jared Price. Mel Stocker scored the run. Adam Moore hit his second long ball of the year in the sixth inning, a solo blast that cut the lead to 6-2 at the time. That is when the Barons tacked on seven runs in the eighth inning to cruise to the win.

Of note for the Jaxx, RHP Steve Bray made his debut Thursday night pitching four scoreless innings while striking out four hitters. Bray joined the team earlier in the day.

The win for the Barons goes to John Ely (3-0) and the loss to Jaxx starter Danny Christensen (0-1). Fernando Hernandez picks up his third save of the season.

Game two of the series is at 7:05 on Friday night. RHP Patrick Ryan (1-1, 12.00) makes the start for West Tenn and RHP Brian Omogrosso (2-0, 2.14) goes for the Barons.
