El Paso Diablos News Release
The El Paso Diablos used a five-run fourth inning to squeak by the Saint Paul Saints 7-6 in the series finale from Cohen Stadium on Wednesday night.
Charles O'Neal got himself out of a jam in the top of the second inning. O'Neal yielded a lead off double from Brian Sprout. O'Neil then hit Josue Lopez in the back with a pitch and had two runners aboard. However, O'Neil fanned Billy Cox and then induced Ryan Priddy into a fly out to end the inning.
The Diablos took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the second. Logan Wood belted a solo home run to left field giving El Paso the 1-0 edge.
The Saints had a big top of the fourth inning. Marcel Longmire led off the frame with a walk. Brian Sprout blasted a double to deep left field moving Longmire to second base. Brent Krause plated both of them with a double of his own. Josue Lopez then singled home Krause for the 4-1 Saints lead.
The Diablos wasted little time responding. El Paso had one of their biggest innings of the season with a five run fourth. Logan Wood had an RBI triple, Evan Conley picked up an RBI double, Jordan Belcher had an RBI single, and Kory Drew had a two-RBI double in the frame, as El Paso took the 6-4 lead into the fifth inning.
Saint Paul went right to work against Charles O'Neal in the fifth. O'Neal walked two batters in the inning and surrendered an RBI double from Brent Krause cutting the lead to just 6-5. O'Neal escaped the frame without surrendering any more runs as he induced Josue Lopez into a groundout
O'Neal got himself out of another jam in the sixth inning. After retiring the first two Saints batters, Matt Brunson reached on a bunt single. Ben Thomas then walked putting two runners aboard. However, as O'Neal had done all game he settled down in the clutch and induced Adam Olow into a groundout to short to retire the side.
The Diablos added an extra run of insurance in the bottom of the seventh. Juan Camacho smashed a one-out double off of the wall. Walter Olmstead followed suit with a double of his own plating Camacho for the 7-5 lead.
The Saints scored one more run in the top of the eighth. Matt Brunson reached on an infield single with two outs. Ben Thomas then doubled to deep left field scoring Brunson and cutting the Diablos lead to 7-6. Dustin Cameron retired the next batter Adam Olow to preserve lead into the ninth inning.
Ned Darley threw a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.
Charles O'Neal (3-0) tossed six full innings surrendering five runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Jeff Urban (0-2) lasted only three innings allowing four earned runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
The El Paso Diablos will open up a three game series against the Pensacola Pelicans on Thursday night at 7:05 pm. Robbie Wachman will throw against Todd Androsko in the contest. The game will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
