Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (May 24, 2007) - Former Major Leaguer Pat Mahomes will make his first home start for the Sioux Falls Canaries on Thursday night at the Birdcage. Mahomes is 2-0 in his first three starts with a 2.60 ERA.
Mahomes has pitched for the Twins ('92-'96), Red Sox ('96-'97), Mets ('99-'00), Rangers ('01), Cubs ('02) and Pirates ('03). In his 11 years in the Majors, Mahomes is 42-39 with a 5.47 ERA, including going 8-0 with a 3.68 ERA for the Mets in 1999. Mahomes spent most of last season in the Atlantic League's Long Island Ducks, where he was 11-4 with a 3.87 ERA.
Also on Thursday, the Sioux Falls Canaries will honor their former public address announcer, Dan Christopherson, with a fundraiser in his memory to assist the Megan's Fund for Children's Books. The Canaries have teamed up with local businesses to create a fan-a-thon for the evening. For each fan in attendance at the May 31 game, the Canaries and local partners will donate $2.50 to the Megan's Fund for Children's Books. The per-fan donation will be added to the substantial donations already made by local businesses.
"With the per-fan structure of the donations, every fan who comes out to the ballpark on Thursday night will help us raise money for the Megan's Fund," said Canaries President John Kuhn. "If you want to help raise money all you need to do is come to Thursday's game."
The Megan's Fund for Children's Books was created by Dan, his wife Dawn, their son Tucker, and Zach Hoisington after Dan's daughter Megan Hoisington was killed in a car accident three days after her wedding in July of 2005. The Megan's Fund for Children's Books provides funds to purchase children's books for Sioux Falls and Sioux Empire area schools.
In addition to raising money for the Megan's Fund for Children's Books, the Canaries will honor Dan Christopherson in a pre-game ceremony. The Canaries will rename the Sioux Falls Stadium Press Box the Dan Christopherson Press Box, and the Canaries will induct Dan into the Canaries Hall of Fame.
