Diablos let game get away late in loss

The Wichita Wingnuts broke open a 4-2 contest with a four-run sixth inning to defeat the El Paso Diablos 8-3 on Friday night from Wichita, KS on Friday night.

The Wingnuts struck early in the game. Kevin Hooper led off the first inning with a triple down the left-field line. Hooper scored on a ground out off the bat of Blake Gailen for the 1-0 lead. Wichita extended the lead to 2-0 in the second inning. Chris Colton hammered an RBI double down the left-field line.

The Diablos got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Jorge Alvarez blasted a solo-homer to left field, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Wingnuts pieced together two more runs in the fifth inning. Blake Gailen and Brenan Herrera each had run-scoring singles in the frame, making it a 4-1 Wichita lead.

El Paso got a run back in the top of the sixth. Kory Drew led off the frame with a double. Drew moved to third base on a wild pitch. Walter Olmstead plated Drew when he grounded out to the short stop, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

The Wingnuts had an explosive bottom of the sixth inning. Wichita plated four runners on four base hits against Justin Knoff in the frame, taking an 8-2 advantage into the seventh.

El Paso scored one final run in the top of the eighth inning. Kory Drew bounced a ball that deflected off the third baseman Thompson and into left field, for a two-base error. Jorge Alvarez scored Drew on an RBI single, making it an 8-3 margin.

Richard Salazar (1-2) threw six innings allowing two earned runs off of five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

David Whigham (3-4) threw five innings allowing four earned runs off of eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

B.J Litchfield threw two scoreless innings striking out four, in relief for El Paso.

The Diablos and Wingnuts will play the second game of their series on Saturday night at 6:05 PM MST in Wichita, KS. Josh Neitz will throw for El Paso in the contest. The game will be broadcast live at ESPN Radio 1380 AM as well as at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
