Round Rock Express News Release

Friday's 6-2 loss to the El Paso Diablos served as a microcosm of the 2003 season for the Round Rock Express. Eight innings of outstanding baseball was completely undone by one Diablo outburst.

El Paso scored five times in the fifth inning to take the first of a four game series in front of 10,719 at The Dell Diamond. Starter and loser D.J. Houlton (2-2) actually struck out the side in the inning, but also gave up home runs to Andy Green and Craig Ansman and triples to Vic Hall and Jhonny Carvajal to turn a 1-0 lead into a 5-1 deficit. In fact, the Round Rock staff struck out a season high 14 in the losing cause. The trend has been a familiar one for Round Rock, who seems to have problems with one inning in most of its losses.

Offensively, the Express was unable to get anything started against Beltran Perez. The El Paso starter was highly effective at getting ahead in the count and limited Round Rock to only six hits and a pair of runs to move his record to 1-3.

Only Eric Cole got anything done at the plate as he picked up two of Round Rock's four doubles. Houlton and Chris Burke also had two-baggers to aid the attack.

The four-game series will continue Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Chad Qualls (1-4) will be on the mound for Round Rock and Ryan Holsten will get his second start of the season for El Paso.
